The Story Behind Every Label

At Bakers, we constantly push the boundaries of what print can do. From labels on your go-to products to the packaging that draws your eye, print is a crucial part of everyday life. When you think about your favourite childhood food or drink, you can instantly picture the label on it. Now, it has brought you back to your childhood in seconds… That is the power of labels and print.

International Print Day celebrates the “Print Life” so we would like to share our story on a life in print. Celebrating the creativity, precision and innovation that goes into every label we produce each day.

Where we do it?

Bakers factory exterior

1973 is where it all began for Bakers, where Roy and Marian Baker set up a factory in Kings Cross. Back then their office was much different to where we are now. Throughout the first few years, Bakers grew rapidly, so much so we had our first factory move to Walthamstow in 1979. After not even 10 years later in 1987 we had another big move to a new premises in Walthamstow. After almost a quarter of a century, it was time for our biggest move yet. Which has led us to our current factory in Brentwood, Essex that we have now. Not only are we growing with Labels, but the BakPac and Baker Materials divisions are a great contribution to the company too.

Since 2011, we’ve expanded expanded significantly, transforming our space into a state-of-the-art facility equipped with some of the best technology in the industry. What began as just two units has now doubled in size, making room for our growing operations, including the addition of our digital pouch production facility. But it’s not just about the equipment- we take pride in creating a supportive and enjoyable workplace for our team. Our facilities include a fully-equipped gym and a dedicated games area and bar, Roy’s, where staff can unwind and connect.

We are very lucky that some of our original staff from the first Walthamstow factory are still working with us today, watching us become bigger and better year after year.

Why a life in print is such a fun and rewarding career

Andy and Cormac in despatch
A career in print offers a unique blend of creativity, technical expertise and problem solving. No two days are the same when you work in print and there are so many opportunities for different roles, from sales & marketing, administration, studio reprographics, planning, production and despatch.

One of the most exciting and rewarding aspects of a career in print- especially in label manufacturing- is the moment you see your work in the real world. Imagine walking through a supermarket and spotting a product on the shelf with a label that you helped print. Whether it’s a vibrant label on a bottle of wine, a striking design on luxury skincare packaging, or even a label on an everyday household product, that moment brings a huge sense of accomplishment. It’s not just about the product itself, but the emotional impact it has on customers. The labels we produce help shape how consumers feel about a brand, creating connections that go beyond the packaging.
